Riley’s Story

Finding a place where your child feels accepted and is given the support to thrive means everything.

Joanne and Riley at Allowah

Meet Riley, an 18-year-old with a great sense of humour, a kind heart and an extraordinary journey. Riley and his family have been a part of the Allowah community for over a decade, finding support, care, and a sense of belonging in a place designed to meet his unique needs.

Riley’s Early Challenges

Riley’s mother, Joanne, recalls the early days: “When Riley was born, we knew there were going to be some issues. It was very full-on from the start.” The family had to navigate numerous doctor’s appointments and therapies, adjusting their lives to accommodate Riley’s needs. Joanne didn’t go back to work, needing to dedicate herself to Riley’s care, which involved a constant search for the right resources and supports.

Finding a Community

The journey was not without its hardships. Joanne shares the difficulties of trying to find a suitable playgroup for Riley. “I remember early on trying to find Riley a play group and getting upset taking him there because he just couldn’t fit in. There were kids running around playing games together, and we were on the sidelines.”

A Place to Belong

Despite these challenges, Riley found a place where he could thrive: Allowah. “Do you like coming to Allowah?” Joanne asks Riley. His enthusiastic response, “Yeah!” speaks volumes. Riley is a social butterfly, enjoying interactions and connections with people. The staff at Allowah have taken the time to understand Riley, catering to his love for game shows like Deal or No Deal and Bingo.

Support for the Family

Allowah isn’t just a haven for Riley; it’s a lifeline for his parents. With a small family, Joanne and her husband John carry much of the responsibility. The respite Allowah provides is invaluable. “Having a place where Riley can come and give us a break means everything. We can have a night out or go out with friends, knowing he’s in a safe environment having the time of his life.”

A Trusted Environment

Trust is crucial, especially when Riley stays overnight at Allowah. “When we did start doing sleepovers, it was like he could have a sleepover but with staff who were highly trained. If he had a seizure or any problems, I knew he was safe and well looked after.”

Without Allowah, I actually don't know where we would be.

A Constant in Their Lives

For Riley and his family, Allowah has been a consistent source of support since he was six years old. Now, at 18, they hope it will continue to be a place where Riley can flourish. “There’s not a lot out there for kids in wheelchairs or with complex needs,” Joanne emphasises. “Without Allowah, I actually don’t know where we would be.”

A Place Especially for Kids and Young People with Complex Disabilities and Healthcare Needs

Riley’s story is a testament to the importance of specialised care and the impact of a supportive community. Allowah has been more than a medical facility for Riley and his family; it’s been a place of joy, safety, and belonging. As Riley affectionately says, “Beauty, mate” it’s clear that Allowah has made a beautiful difference in their lives.
