Our team of dietitians are highly qualified and skilled in working with children and their families as well as adults with a particular focus on working with people with complex disability. We focus on providing tailored nutrition support to help individuals achieve their health and feeding goals.

1. Accessing Our Services

Who Can Access Our Services?

We accept referrals for children and young adults who:

    • Live within our catchment area (see map below) and do not currently access other Allowah services.
    • Attend other programs at Allowah, such as respite, Out of Home Care (OOHC), step-down care post-acute hospital admission, or our day program.

Where We Offer Services

Our dietitians provide flexible service options to meet your needs:

    • Onsite at Allowah

    • Home visits (travel charges apply)

    • School/Daycare visits (travel charges apply)

    • Telehealth reviews, when appropriate

2. Types of Services

Areas of Expertise

Our dietitians have extensive experience in a range of feeding and nutrition concerns, including:

    • Enteral nutrition (tube feeding and oral supplements, including blended tube feeds)

    • Texture-modified diets

    • Paediatric feeding difficulties (problem feeding, sensory feeding challenges, fussy eating)

    • Constipation and growth concerns

    • Basic food allergies

We regularly support children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, Rett syndrome, Trisomy 21, genetic abnormalities, and neurodivergent conditions.

Our Feeding Philosophy

We use a responsive feeding framework that prioritises reducing stress at mealtimes. Our goal is to create positive food experiences for children and their families.

3. What to Expect

Initial Consultation

A consultation with our dietitians will typically include:

  • Understanding your goals for dietetic support

  • Gathering information about your family, lifestyle, and daily routines

  • Assessing growth, considering disability-related factors

  • Discussing mealtime routines, food preferences, and dietary restrictions

  • Reviewing tube feeding details (if applicable), including formulas, recipes, and supplies

  • Evaluating digestion, hydration, medications, and supplements

  • Estimating nutritional needs

  • Developing a personalised nutrition plan

  • Reviewing progress and making adjustments as needed

Most individuals require medium to long-term follow-up, with appointments scheduled every two weeks to six months, depending on individual needs.

4. Our Dietetics Services

Comprehensive Nutrition Support

We offer a comprehensive range of nutrition services, including:

    • Individual nutrition assessments and tailored advice

    • Tube feeding and Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) plans

    • Detailed nutrient analysis

    • Growth assessments

    • HEN registrations to reduce the cost of tube feeds and specialised nutrition drinks

    • Written feeding plans for support workers, schools, respite, and day programs

    • Individual food and nutrition education, including:

      • Supermarket tours

      • Healthy eating guidance

      • Meal planning support

      • Basic home cooking demonstrations

    • Additional supports available upon request
